Our salary data is drawn directly from our internal payroll records, providing an accurate reflection of the rates families are currently paying across the market. By using real payroll data rather than surveys or estimates, our Salary Guide offers reliable insights into current nanny salaries.
The salary figures in this guide are based on a Live-Out Nanny working 50 hours per week and are shown as annual gross salaries.
A gross salary is the amount paid before tax and National Insurance deductions. This means the figures include the nanny’s tax and National Insurance contributions, which are deducted through payroll before they receive their take-home pay.
Please note that actual salaries may vary depending on factors such as location, experience, qualifications, responsibilities, working hours, and any additional duties required by the role.
What other costs are there when employing a nanny?
When employing a nanny, it’s important to budget for more than just their salary. As an employer, you’ll also be responsible for a number of additional costs that contribute to the overall cost of employment. Understanding these from the outset will help you plan your budget and ensure you’re meeting your employer obligations.
Together, these additional expenses make up your Total Cost of employing a nanny and may include:
- Employer’s National Insurance Contributions
- Employer’s Pension Contributions
- Employer’s Liability Insurance
- Statutory Entitlement Costs

What is the Nannytax Salary Guide?
The Salary Guide is our highly anticipated annual report showcasing the average gross salaries for nannies across the UK. It is based on actual payroll data from Nannytax’s records, giving you a credible benchmark when setting a salary.
What kinds of nanny salaries are included in the Guide?
The data within the guide is based on a nanny working 50 hours per week and includes both live-in and live-out salary information. All figures are in gross (i.e. before tax and National Insurance) so that you can understand the full cost to the employer.
Why should I use the Salary Guide when hiring a nanny?
The Salary Guide helps you make an informed decision on what salary to pay your nanny taking into account your location and current market trends such as the cost of living. With data based on thousands of nanny salaries, and results regularly quoted in national newspapers such as the Financial Times and Guardian, the Salary Guide is a credible and reliable source.
How often is the Salary Guide updated, and how should I use it?
The Salary Guide is published annually and reflects the most recent payroll data available. You should use it as a guide whilst also taking into consideration your nanny’s qualifications, experience and any extra responsibilities, rather than a fixed rule.
What else does the Guide tell me beyond average salaries?
In addition to salary levels by region, the Guide provides statistics such as the percentage of nannies paid monthly vs weekly, how many employers agree gross vs net salary, and trends over recent years (such as salary increases).
How do we capture our data?
All salary data is based on Nannytax’s internal payroll records. The annual salary figures are calculated using a live-out nanny working 50 hours per week. All salaries are shown as gross pay, meaning they represent the nanny’s earnings before deductions for Income Tax and National Insurance.
What is the average live-in nanny salary?
The average gross hourly rate for a London live-in nanny is £16.43. For more information on live-in nanny salaries, download our full Salary Guide.

For example, London and other major cities will command higher wages, and salaries may vary for full-time nannies, part-time nannies, or live-in nanny positions.
