Types of Nanny Jobs

Live In Nanny/Live Out Nanny

Before you embark on your nanny search, we recommend doing a little research into the types of nannies available. This will help you identify your needs and what kind of nanny would be the most suitable. A nanny’s job can vary depending on the hours, flexibility and childcare arrangement you require. For example, a nanny share is very different to a full time live in nanny. Learn more about the different types of nanny jobs below.

Full time Live Out Nanny

  • Average 50 hours per week.
  • Duties include caring for children including light housekeeping, cooking and cleaning.

Full time Live In Nanny

  • Average 50 hours per week + occasional babysitting.
  • Duties include caring for children including light housekeeping, cooking and cleaning.
  • You must provide food and accommodation for your nanny if you are using the accommodation offset allowance.
  • You must give your nanny privacy outside of their working hours.

Part time Nanny

  • Average 25 hours per week (flexible).
  • Duties include caring for children including light housekeeping, cooking and cleaning.

Nanny share

  • Average hours are flexible/vary.
  • Duties include caring for children including light housekeeping, cooking and cleaning.
  • There isn’t a legal limit on the number of children, but a nanny can only look after two families’ children at once.

After School Nanny

  • Average 25 hours per week (post-school hours such as 3pm – 7/8pm)
  • Duties revolve around the children’s post-school routine. For example, school pick up, supervising homework and preparing dinner.
  • Some After School Nannies will also offer school drop-off hours in the mornings.

Temporary/ Emergency Nanny

  • Employed for a short period of time or to provide cover in an interim period. For example, if your nanny is unwell or on maternity leave.
  • Costs and hours will vary.
