What is Nanny Employers Liability Insurance?

Nannytax | What is Nanny Employers Liability Insurance?

When you employ a nanny to work in your home, it’s important to consider insurance. All UK employers are responsible for any injuries their employee sustains whilst at work, and this applies to nanny employers too.

Do I need Nanny Employers Liability Insurance?

If you employ a nanny, you need to have Employers Liability Insurance. It is a legal requirement in the UK for all employers, including nanny employers, to hold a suitable Employers Liability Insurance to protect themselves against claims made by employees.

My nanny is self-employed, do I need insurance?

We recommend you consider taking out an Employers Liability Insurance policy, even if your nanny is self-employed, so that you are protected if your nanny injures themself and you are found to be liable.

I have Home Insurance, do I need Nanny Employers Liability Insurance?

We recommend you speak to your Household Insurance provider who can advise you based on the cover you have.

What happens if I don’t have insurance?

If you are found to not have Employers Liability Insurance, you can be fined up to £2,500 for every day you do not have valid insurance.

Failure to present your Employers Liability Insurance certificate can result in a further fine of £1,000.

In serious cases, in which an employee is injured and the employer is uninsured, employers may face prosecution.

Further to this, employers may have to pay the compensation themselves if an employee is injured as a result of working for them.

When do I need to get Employers Liability Insurance?

We advise that you get Employers Liability Insurance as soon as you become an employer.
