Cost of nursery placements soaring

The Daycare Trust has today released a survey showing that the cost of nursery placements and childminders is soaring. Some parents are now paying up to £22,100 a year per child for a nursery placement. This is an increase of over 40 per cent in seven years.

The Daycare Trust survey follows on from Nannytax’s Annual Wages Survey released in January. The Nannytax survey shows that the average salary of a daily nanny in central London is now £32,216, which may sound high, but remember a nanny usually cares for more than just one child. In addition, the nannies who can command salaries in excess of £30K are the nannies who are willing to consider a more unorthodox working week. This means working for more than one family. And if you share a nanny with another family, and you each have two children, you will be far better off than by sending those same 4 children to a nursery.

Stuart Maclean Managing Director of Nannytax says “Nannies also provide invaluable flexibility in comparison to other childcare providers. If you are running late you have the peace of mind of knowing that your children are safely at home, and likewise if your child is ill you can go to work just like on any other day, without the stress of finding alternative childcare.”
